A good post over at Web Pro News on two new video released by Matt Cutts that deal with webspam, penguin and the nature of Google penalties. The video’s outline the differences between a manual penalty and one based on an algorithmic update. The differences in how they are dealt with by Google and a little on how to recover from them.

“…Guess what: in both videos, he talks about Google’s quality guidelines. That is your recovery manual, as far as Google is concerned…”

The interesting part of the article is looking at the websites that were initial hammered by Panda  (Thats if a Panda can hammer something!) and were those websites are now.

The reality is that some of the websites have completely disappeared and the vast majority of others have not recovered there pre Panda rankings. There is only one real recovery story. Can you guess of it is…..

Great Penguin and Panda Tool – Panguin Tool

panguin tool

I have discovered this great tool over at Barracuda Digital  that allows you to plot your Google Analytics traffic against the Panda and Penguin updates. Its very simply to use and once you have logged into your analysis account you can look for traffic trends after updates to both Panda and Penguin.  It’s great for analysis of current clients and will be really useful for possible new client analysis at the pitch stage.

You can login to the tool here - The Panguin tool

Matt Cutts has mentioned that there will be a Panda refresh over the coming week either the 15th, 16th, 17th or 18th of March.

“…Google’s head of search spam, Matt Cutts, announced new updates with Google’s Penguin and Panda algorithms and new link network targets in 2013. Matt announced this during the SMX West panel….”

Cutt’s also mentioned that a major Penguin update is due this year.

“…The last Penguin update we have on record was Penguin 3 in October 2012. Before that, we had Penguin 2 in May 2012 and the initial release in April.

So, expect a major Penguin release that may send ripples through the SEO industry this year…..”
